Chester, located on the bluffs of the Mississippi River, is known as the home of Popeye as the six-foot, 900 lb. bronze statue of the sailor stands in the Elzie C. Segar Memorial Park. Located next to Chester Bridge, the park also honors other characters from the notable cartoon as well as its creator, Elzie Segar. The annual Popeye Picnic and Parade takes place every Memorial Day weekend and brings in thousands of Popeye fans from across the world.
Home to several parks and historical sites, travelers love visiting the Fort Kaskaskia State Historic Site and Pierre Menard's Home, the French Creole-style structure built in 1815 for the first lieutenant governor of Illinois. Across the river from Fort Kaskaskia is the tiny island where French explorer Pere Jacques Marquette founded the historical church St. Ignace Michigan. The Liberty Bell, gifted from King Louis XV of France, sits just west of the church today. A great spot for hikers visiting Chester, Illinois hosts the Turkey Bluffs State Fish and Wildlife area, where trails and scenic overlooks are aplenty.
